Minnesota’s Housing Challenges
Minnesota’s housing market has two main problems – there are not enough available homes and those that are available are too expensive for many buyers.
The simplest solution to both of these issues is to build more houses in Minnesota. And not just any type of home. We need smartly built, affordably priced starter homes that are accessible to Minnesotans currently left out of the housing market. These include many Gen-Zs, millennials, non-whites, and members of Minnesota’s workforce. “Homeownership is all of it” aims to open up the housing market to more of our friends and neighbors.
Starter Homes Are Illegal Today
Starter homes are the heart of a strong housing market. Excluding them hurts Minnesota.
The Homeownership Gap
Our state has one of the worst homeownership equity gaps in the county. Minnesota’s exclusionary policies have profound impacts on quality of life, health, wealth creation, and more.
Land Supply
The Twin Cities region has a shortage of available land. This is connected to land use policies aimed at avoiding sprawl.
Home Inventory
The lack of home inventory drives up prices of homes that are for sale beyond the reach of many Minnesotans.
